I know that this thread has been dead for a few months now but I'm posting this just to show what a few months and a trailer can do to change people's
mind. Here's a link to a thread at the Official Star Trek Movie Forums where some fans are actually defending Karl's casting as Bones and some of them
even believe he'll do a fabulous job... You can read starting at message #18.

i've heard through the grapevine here from inside the production that the best thing about the new 'star trek babies' is karl's dead-on mccoy,
which is encouraging. people just don't seem to realise what a gifted actor he is because he's so freakin' gorgeous.
one thing that makes me sad, tho, is that in all his interviews over the past year or so, karl has shed his kiwi accent altogether and speaks in an american accent, perhaps for the reason someone stated earlier about making it easier to get roles in the US, but it makes me sad because his natural voice is so damn sexy. makes me wonder if he's lost his kiwi entirely (that can happen to actors particularly when they have to do 'american' a great deal, it often obliterates native accents for some reason) or if he just puts it on for interviews. i really hope he's just putting it on to play the game. |

Leah, you'll be happy to know that he was recently interviewed on NZ TV for Kids Can in September and it was his usual spunky Kiwi accent

thanks, ballyorn, what a huge relief! (his american accent freaks me out)
is there a link to that interview somewhere here? the 'kids can' thing was quite a big deal here, lots of tv spots (no karl tho); i missed his interview and found a link somewhere - i can't remember where now - but it wouldn't work for me and believe me, i tried! |

cheers, necromancer, you guys are fabulous!
no probs with the link this time... lord love a duck that man is gorgeous, i just wanna tackle him to the ground and jump his bones. and great to hear his kiwi twang is alive and well, i really was starting to wonder. i think jackie brown has a bit of a thing for karl, too, from the sounds of it, she's a dag. i don't watch much network tv but that is one telethon i will not miss. next june...i'm glued to the box waiting for karl to take off his clothes...) |

Anyway, it is encouraging indeed but I think the reason why people have never taken Karl seriously is not really because he's absolutely gorgeous but rather because of the type of roles he's taken on so far: mainly warriors and a role where he barely said a few words (Kirill). Johnny Depp, as an example, is also gorgeous and yet he's being taken seriously, you know? The few meaty roles that Karl has had in the past have all been in NZ productions, which doesn't do much to build his credibility over here in North America. Comanche Moon was a start but he needs more than that. Hopefully Star Trek will help him some more.

i just wrote a reply that i somehow managed to erase, grrr! i'm such a cyber moron.
anyway, lady vaako, i think the problem lies in the US casting system. whereas here, karl is considered a fine actor who just happens to be damn good looking, i think his looks and sex appeal have counted against him in the US industry, which is far more 'image conscious' and less willing to take chances and think outside the square. due to his physical appearance and height (he's very tall by hollywood standards), he's only been offered a certain type of role - the pretty actionman/warrior with sparse dialogue and little emotional range, like you said - so he's been forced to take what he can get hoping to transcend typecasting. by virtue of his sheer talent and charisma he's been able to rise above the lightweight roles (and distinct lack of dialogue!) on offer to turn in compelling performances; the camera just loves him and there's no denying it. star trek could be a big breakthrough for him, a chance to show more range and depth, fingers crossed! (even here in nz, karl's looks, height and sex appeal have counted against him; there were rumblings pj was considering casting him in the role of the father 'jack salmon' in 'lovely bones' but that he was deemed too attractive for what is an 'average joe' part. so it appears that will be karl's cross to bear and challenge to overcome if he wants a diverse career.) |

Thanks for the insight on Lovely Bones, Leah! I
could rant and rave about that crap for days...
Here's hoping that Star Trek will open their moronic eyes to Karl at last.....

amen! i bet karl would love to get uglied up with some expertly applied make-up (tho i think hollywood's idea of an 'uglied up' karl was munder
in 'ghost shit', which i find hilarious because munder is drop-dead shaggolicious, i like my men scruffy and unkempt and karl as munder...lord have
mercy, don't even get me started), but making him 'average' might be quite hard! his height woud be a problem there, too, he must be well over 6
feet and towers over most actors, who tend to be short for some reason. i guess he just didn't fit the character's profile |

Yeah Leah, thanks for the info. on the Lovely Bones. But I think Peter made a HUGE mistake casting Mark Wahlberg. He is so WRONG for that part, it's not
even funny! I wonder what happened to Ryan Gosling, the last I had heard before he decided on Wahlberg, he was supposed to play the father. Karl or Ryan would
of been MUCH better looks and acting wise than Mark Wahlberg!
I just hope he doesn't ruin the movie for me, because I really liked that book. And yeah, PJ has a GREAT make-up crew, they could of made Karl not so drop-dead gorgeous and let him do it. He'd do such a great job. That is a very meaty character to play.

i agree, youngun. i know this much: during the pre-production cast read-throughs, the shit hammer came down and ryan was deemed far too young for the role of
the father and he got the sack; this must be at least partially true because i heard from some of the crew who had been in pennsylvania where the exteriors
were shot that rachel looked like a cradle-robbing perve next to ryan.
why pj and fran didn't then turn to karl to come to the rescue is beyond me, but like i said before i did hear he was deemed too gorgeous to play the dad (I POOH POOH THAT!). and why wahlberg is another mystery, pj must have had a good reason.... i have a very good friend who was on set through the entire shoot and he is very close-lipped about wahlberg's perf (contractually he can't talk about it but he usually slips me a bone if i'm not privy), so i must admit i'm a bit worried. but, wahlberg has turned in at least one decent perf in 'the departed', i thought he was damn good in that and i don't even like him, so hope springs eternal! |

i wrote and posted the comment above very hurriedly before so my apologies if it's sort of all over the place, i only read it properly just now, it's a

Well, I am a die hard Trek fan. Have been for 30 years or so.
Now, to be honest when I heard Karl was going to be McCoy...I was like WHAT??? Karl Urban as McCoy would take some getting use too. I have not heard him speaking as McCoy yet. Seen him in uniform tho. Hehe I liked that. I am sure there is a thread here that will show me Karl as McCoy. Maybe speaking as McCoy. Am I that lucky??? I am going to go search now. Sounds to me like the writers knew what they were dealing with and will hold true to what they know of him. And hence he will not disappoint. I have to say I
don't put a lot of emphasis on what writers have to say about a movie. I see it and make my own decisions just as we all do. Unless I'm wrong, it
seems he's going to be one with a little more experience than most of the cast. Sure it's important what people think. This movie is going to have a
huge audience, but where do we see him after this performance? Knowing him the way we do. He has more coming up after ST.

If it can make you feel any better, one of the comments that came out most frequently from people who had the opportunity to see one of those special previews of the movie reserved for the media is that Karl totally nailed the character of Bones. They said his performance was "dead on". And they're not even fans of the man.

Yeah, I really got the impression some fans were very set on who they wanted to play which character, and they weren't open to who was eventually cast and
generally slagged Karl (and others) off. Some of the more recent comments by those doubters about Karl have seemed to be favourable since the media's
special preview. I think all of those reviews I read commented on his fab performance.
