Jay Nixon says the Kansas City area has a probable case of the swine flu, the first in Missouri. Nixon announced the suspected case involving a Platte County resident this evening at a hastily called Capitol news conference. The probable case was discovered earlier Wednesday during lab tests on samples sent to the state health lab. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta will determine if the case is swine flu. Nixon's office said those tests currently are taking about two days.The swine flu is believed to have originated in Mexico, where it's confirmed or suspected in more than 150 deaths and nearly 2,500 illnesses. The governor's office released no information about the Platte County resident because notification is still pending. It was not immediately clear if the Platte County resident had traveled to Mexico. The person will be asked to remain home for seven days after symptoms first appeared to avoid spreading the illness. We have lots of people who cross the Mexican border day in and day out. My cousins were in Mexico the last 2 weeks for fishing off the coast. They are fine. My family is fine. The media is making people panic for no good reason. Wash your hands. Don't kiss strangers. Take the usual precautions as if it were general flu time. No worries. Don't panic!! They shut down one school for the rest of the week at least, but in neighboring Ft. Worth, they said on the news tonight that they are shutting down the entire school district. I think they said until May 8 at the earliest. There has also been the first U.S. death from the Swine Flu. It was a little boy (I think they said he was 2 years old) from Mexico that died in Houston. Like Marilee said, just wash your hands regularly, and use hand sanitizer (I have been keeping one in my purse, car, and at the office) that is alcohol based. They also said that people were flooding the emergency rooms thinking they have the flu when they did not. Probably they just had allergies since the symptoms are so similiar (congestion, running nose, etc). They had a doctor on the news talking about that and he said that you will know when you have the flu because you will feel like you have been hit by a Mac Truck. The were talking about the Swine Flu and they had one reporter doing an experiment. They were showing that no matter how much you wash you hands you will still have germs. He would wash his hands about like anyone would then he put on a special lotion and put his hands under a black light. The whites spots that shows up are germs still on his hands. Then he would wash he hands again for 15 seconds like the CDC recommends and he still had germs on his hands though not as many. They also said that if someone within 6 feet of you coughs you can catch it. A school in the suburb of Dallas I live in just had a school closing.

And as I said, when this flu first broke out, WHOOP-DE-BLOODY-DO!!! There is no panic here, especially not in here in Melbourne, only by - as it always is - the media!! Seriously, everyone I've spoken to about it knows more people die of normal flu every year. No one panics about that. The media keeps on trying to beat it up. Thankfully they've turned it down a notch after being slammed by reader comments. I'm all for informing the public, but c'mon, it's just like bird flu all over again. More people got killed by lightning strikes last year than died from bird flu. So much for another massive deadly threat to human lives. The thing that really bugs me is with all the drama of the swine flu outbreak, the apparent cause of it has received little attention. Maybe humans need to take more care with the welfare of their farm animals.
