Review: J.J. Abrams brings the fun back to Star Trek"Urban nails McCoy from his first utterance, and his performance is one of the delights of the film."

Loved this!!
The man who steals Star Trek--Karl Urban as "Bones" McCoy "New Zealand actor Karl Urban, of Lord of the Rings and Pathfinder and one of the Bourne movies, figured that there had to be something "bourbony" about the Southern fried country doctor Bones McCoy in Star Trek. So that's how he played the guy when he auditioned for the part. He hits the drawl just lightly enough to work. Something must've gone right. He landed the role and is already winning plaudits for being one of the best things about it. But to win the part, he had to overcome a certain prejudice from director J.J. Abrams.

Love that last review you posted, Deb, especially the last line, "Never underestimate what a good actor can do.".

Review from the LA Times
Seven things I love about the new 'Star Trek' 2. KARL URBAN IS THE REAL McCOY: There are plenty of great performances in this movie. Chris Pine is charismatic and cocky and just right as a young
Kirk (and thank goodness he didn't slip into a William
Shatner imitation, that would have been death for the film) and Zachary Quinto is pitch-perfect as the smoldering Spock,
who is just barely keeping a clamp on those emotions. But I have to say the great revelation was New Zealand native Karl Urban who, more than the two main stars, does a full-on
vocal imitation of his predecessor, DeForest
Kelley, who was such an eccentric Southern sourpuss. I sat down with Pine for a pleasant lunch a few weeks and he gushed about Urban's
hilarious turn. "When people see what Karl Urban did with Dr. McCoy, they are going to freak out. It is DeForest Kelley, but it's not. With my
performance I had to go at it with a scalpel because Shatner's work was unique and locked into memory. But, man, what Karl pulled off ... " I'm
guessing that in the next film we see a lot more of Urban and his laughter-is-the-best-medicine approach to "Trek."

chris LUUUURVES karl! chris LUUUUUURVES karl!
(i think bromances are so precious, i wish more straight guys were secure enough in their sexuality to admit when they have a man-crush on a great guy; we girls don't seem to have so much of an issue with it but men...they are so often hung up on their staunchness and machismo! to their credit, those trek guys seem really open and funny and willing to take the mickey out of themselves, good on them!) |

JoBlo Star Trek Review
"Karl Urban is fantastic as the put upon doctor who is not a magician, or whatever position he is asked to take on. He plays the character with sincerity and charm, giving an exciting and very funny performance. He did DeForest Kelley proud."

New 'Trek' Should Live Long and Prosper"Of particular note is Karl Urban. About a billion light years from Middle Earth (where he was Eomer), his McCoy is so delicious dead-on, so absolutely channeling the spirit and spunk of DeForest Kelly that he almost steals the film from everyone else."

Over at Rotten Tomatoes, Star Trek is currently sitting on 95% with 70 fresh reviews and 4 rotten (and the rotten
ones are not even "rotten" ones!)
And I was just reading viewer reviews over at AICN and I have to post this one comment said about Karl because it was so KEWL!!! "Major respect to Urban for nailing with a fucking huge nail gun Bones" Excuse me whilst I reply - "FUCK YEAH!!"

BTW, Deb, one "negative" review I read on Rotten Tomatoes was by a guy who is known to dislike Sci-fi. C'mon, that's like me writing a review
for a reality TV show - you just know it's going to be a bad review. He didn't hate the movie, but gave it the thumbs down anyway.

it's rather amazing how few negative reviews there are on 'RT', i would have expected more than 7 - the last i looked it was 122 positive, 7
negative - simply from critics who are hard-core trekkies that couldn't get over a reboot of their beloved 'trek' world...but it would appear our
karl has won them over! (ok, maybe more than just karl, but still, who could resist karl as 'bones mccoy', NO SANE PERSON i tell you! :-D )
