ok, i've had a bit of time to gather my thoughts; i will preface this by pointing out that during the 'star fleet academy' segment, something went
wrong with the projector and for about 15 minutes the screen was in two parts, the top at the bottom and the bottom at the top. it took them ages to get it
sorted and it was VERY distracting, it broke the momentum of the movie for me a bit as nobody left the theatre to tell the management something was wrong so i
finally got up and reported the fault, so i missed several minutes to boot. that was a bummer, but i'm going to take my boy to see it on sunday, so i'm
looking forward to seeing again in all its uninterrupted glory!
in short, i think 'trek' is a hoot! just a hell of a fun ride, well conceived, well made, well paced, tremendous fun. i've heard it criticised for not being 'thoughtful' and 'meaningful' and 'emotional' enough, but i found it engaging and appealing (it isn't, after all, 'sense and sensibility', it's 'star trek'!) and full of heart. karl is indeed perfect as 'bones', i'm so proud of him, he almost steals the movie. the entire cast was great, nobody let me down, i was right there rooting for them all. and i was surprised by how much i loved pine as 'kirk', that kid has charisma, and he and karl were sweet together, as was pine and quinto. quinto didn't float my boat as 'spok' initially, but he really grows into the role and i absolutely loved his 'spock' by the end, the whole thing just felt 'right'. i hate it when people nit pic and point out little flaws in a movie just to provide 'balance', but fuck that shit, nothing really bothered me enough to mention and i've been on a little high since i saw it so i'm going to keep it up. above all, the movie made me feel HAPPY (i like feeling happy!) and spoilery: one of my fave bits is when bones keeps fussing over kirk and injecting him in the neck, and kirk freaks out and shouts 'stop that!', but bones just keeps following him and hovering over him and injecting kirk in the neck, much to kirk's chagrin, it was priceless, i was laughing out loud. i'm sure as things have time to sink in and more people see it, i'll want to discuss more specific aspects of the movie, but for now i'm just feeling very pleased and a bit smug for some reason! |

Great review, Leah and BUMMER about the screening problems!
Saw it for the second time tonight! LOVED IT EVEN MORE!! And my Gawd, I picked up on some much stuff I missed the first time. Just wanted to say - the prologue is AWE INSPIRING. I remember the first time, it was so intense and so sad but I didn't cry. But this time I had tears running down my face, and I'm damn sure I'll be crying when I see it again on Saturday. Probably one of the best opening sequence of any movie I've seen. The Cast! WOW!!! I'll say it again! They couldn't have cast any better than what they did! And it was great to read in some of the reviews, the actors being referring to as the new MAGNIFICENT SEVEN! My admiration of Chris Pine continues to grow (and not just because he has great taste in
men ) and also Zach Quinto.
And I have to add, because I've been reading all the reviews both critic and fan, OMFG, it is with SUCH PLEASURE that I read the comments about Karl's performance (especially after the bullshit flack that was said about him when he was first cast) FINALLY, Karl is being widely recognised for the fine actor he is! But SHIT, we Urbbies knew that all along!!
Karl Rocks! This movie rocks!!! It leaves you with a grin from ear to ear!!!

Great reviews, girls.
Leah, that sucks about the projector stuffing up. Did they give you a comp ticket for that? I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. Deb, you probably didn't cry the first time because a) you were too excited, and b) I would have given you shit about it.

lol.
NO, those cheap-asses would not give me a comp, they said i would have had to leave during the movie in order to get a refund/comp ticket. FUCKWITS! (sorry for the profanity but that really pissed me off) that's okay, i'm still on a high from seeing 'trek' so i can't seem to stay angry for more than 10 seconds one of the things i really liked about how jj handled the story was the focus on the 'cult of personality', the yin and the yang of kirk and spock that really drives the film, their conflict, their resolution, kirk and spock finally coming together, the two sides of the coin joining in strength, as the beating heart of the story (with help from bones, of course!), and the chemistry just works, thank goodness! |

I'm the first American to write a review? WELL DAMN! LOL! No, I'm just kidding. I went to see the 7p.m. screening and LOVED IT!! Karl seriously steals
the movie with every scene he has. I think the audience really enjoyed him as Dr. McCoy. I don't know what I can say because some of you have already seen
the movie. But I really thought it was a solid cast. I give it a 4 1/2 out of 5 stars and yes, I'm going to see this movie again.
Oh and Deb thought I would probably cry in the first 10 minutes of the movie. Yeah sorry hon. That didn't happen!

Deb, you probably didn't cry the first time because a) you were too excited, and b) I would have given you shit about it.
a) Lou, you are absolutely RIGHT!!! OMG, we had just met Karl, had a glass of champers and sat down in our seats with a full view of the cast about 10 rows in front of us, and saw the movie at the world premiere, a month ahead of the rest of the world!!! YEAP! I was pretty excited!!!
b) Oh Gawd Yeah!! You would have ribbed the shit out of me!!
Oh and Deb thought I would probably cry in the first 10 minutes of the movie. Yeah sorry hon. That didn't happen! Come on, Nikki, not even a sniff?? That was a pretty powerful couple of minutes?

Hey guys, I'm sorry that I didn't put much effort into my first review. I've barely had enough sleep at all this week. Here's my longer
review:
Zachary Quinto: No one else could have been choosen as Spcok because he just NAILES it! I'm not a big Trekkie fan to be honest with you, but I've seen Star Trek enough times to know that Zach was the best choice for Spock. He makes Spock have barely any emotions, which he has to fight during the movie, until he and Jim get into a fight. But man, I have nothing but good things about this guy. Ok, now of course I HAVE to talk about Mr. Karl Urban. He steals the movie with every scene he has, and it's just PERFECT! When Bones first joins Starfleet with the whole, "I may throw up on you," speech, he got a really big laugh from the audience in the theater I was in. Everyone really seemed to love him and when I asked my friend Aaron if he thought that Karl looked like the late DeForest Kelly, he said that Karl basically was the young spitting image of the late De Kelly. Also, I've been talking to some of my friends who are Karl Urban fans, and we're so happy that he's getting the recognition that he should have gotten with a lot of the other movies he was in. He's a great actor and a lot of us know that! Oh Simon Pegg was seriously brilliant as well, even though he wasn't in the movie until about 1/2 way through it. The best part was of course was Scotty said, "I like this ship! It's exciting!" Oh man that got a TON of laughs! I don't know if I can say much more though. This movie was just action-packed, funny and more importantly: A KICK ASS MOVIE! I give this movie a 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. Yeah that's how awesome it was!

Thank you for all of your wonderful reviews.
I saw Star Trek twice. I loved it! It was exciting with lots of humor, lots of action and great special effects. The characters were perfect, especially Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard McCoy. There were so many moments that brought tears to my eyes. My son thought Karl was the closest to the original character, and the funniest. I gave it a 10 out of 10. My son gave it a 9 out of 10. We both want to see it again.

Barb, I'm glad you liked it. I'm also glad your son did too. A 9 out of 10 from him is pretty damned awesome. When will you be seeing it next?
Anyone else planning on seeing it again?

Me and hubby liked it, yes. But, out of 5 stars we gave it 3 1/2. And YES, we are HARD CORE original Star Trek GEEKS, we have all 3 seasons on DVD and watch
them ALL the time
These are the things we had a problem with: The Uhura/Spock relationship Bizarre and not
very plausible, IMHO ( hubby agreed, felt odd and forced to us ), and some of the way the earlier Kirk acted was a bit over-the-top for us. Really didn't need to be so much so, also, in our opinions.
Some other "nit-picky" stuff I am not going to get into here, but, as I said, over-all, we liked it, but are being honest in our opinions. Zachary Quinto was "spot-on" as Spock, Karl as Bones and Simon Pegg as Scotty! WOW! But the guy they had playing Chekov, we felt, could of been a bit better. I have mixed feelings about Zoe Saldana's Uhura. Some of the time, I
thought she worked, other times, not. Eric Bana was inspired as Nero!
I can wait until the DVD to see it again. But was glad for the first time, I got to see it on the BIG screen. They need to make a sequel and flesh everyone out more and GET RID OF the Uhura/Spock thing. Where the hell they dug that stupid plot-line out of, I'll never know, but it needs to be ditched, BIG TIME!

These are the things we had a problem with: The Uhura/Spock relationship Like you at times I was rather "Huh?" at the Spock/Uhura relationship. At times I was "Okay..." and at others it was "WTF
Mate?" There were times I could see it but not really. After seeing The Final Frontier Uhura/Scotty always stuck with me. I was a young
teenager when I first saw that movie on VHS.
Zachary Quinto was "spot-on" as Spock, Karl as Bones and Simon Pegg as Scotty! WOW! But the guy they had playing Chekov, we felt, could of been a bit better. I think I'm developing a crush on Zachary Quinto. He played Spock perfectly and his attitude during the role. You know that guy was having fun playing
the character.

in interesting article that explores the spock/uhura luuuurve angle a bit:

Thank you for your reviews, and for the link leah.
I want Sulu's folding sword. I cry every time when they show the Enterprise for the first time. I laughed so much when Dr. McCoy kept treating Kirk for all those symptoms. I know I shouldn't, but I liked Kirk getting beat up. I don't think he won a single fight. Oh, and Admiral Archer's poor prize Beagle. I loved old Spock mind melding with Kirk. And I did like this Uhura. She had a lot of self-confidence, and she made sure we knew she was fantastic. news.yahoo.com Capt. Kirk, American icon? New Frontier renewed Thanks to Barbara.

I have to say that I agree with earlier comments Spock could not have been cast any better than if Leonard Nimoy himself had played him....Seriously Zachary Quinto was brilliant And yes of course Karl steals any scene he is in even when he doesn't speak his expressions say it all (or am I biased). Did anyone see Karls interview on Utube where he talks about all the pranks the cast played on each other and how he took delighted revenge in jabbing Chris Pine with the hyper-spray every time. That had me laughing in a little place all of my own each and every time Chris Pines Kirk is very likable and dare I say it preferable to Shatner (shock horror) however I disagree with comments about Simon Pegg as Scotty, yes he is funny, but he seems to try to hard with his delivery, or at least I felt that way. I don't remember Mr Scott being so comical in the original series. The Spock / Uhura relationship was an unusual twist, but I thought ZQ was extremely handsome and quite sexy in his kissing scenes so why shouldn't he get the girl for once, anyway there was no sign of Nurse Chapel although you hear her name called. I assume it's not a character they will be bringing back in a big way - is this is a mark of respect to the late Majel Barret-Roddenberry? Who's voice was still used for the ships computer - recorded just before her death last year. Chekov was great, very much in keeping with the original character, although was he supposed to be that young? The biggest surprise to me was how noticeable JJA made Sulu, he never really stood out for me when I was younger, but with the fight scene on the drill the character suddenly has a completely new feel - brilliant I really loved this film, I have been a lifelong Trek fan and was not disappointed in anyway. I loved all the little touches they bought back that made the original Star Trek what it was, like the whistle of the ships com and the beep of individual communicators. Also who couldn't help feeling sorry for Olsen in the red shirt as soon as he was assigned to the away team. One of my new best ever films
